Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio has donated a sum of N1million to take care of the operation of 15-year-old Olamide Awofade, who was knocked down by a commercial motorcyclist, leading to the amputation of one of her legs while her fate lies in the balance with the second leg.

In the last week edition of Sunday Tribune, it was reported that Olamide was knocked down on 4 March, 2010 after her father dropped her off on her way to school, a development which led to her shuttling between home and the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) for months, after her visit to the traditional bone treatment specialists proved incompetent in taking care of her fractured bones.

However, Olamide’s family was asked to produce N800, 000 for the operation on Olamide’s leg, while it was also asked to deposit N250, 000 for the purchase of artificial leg.

Mr. Awofade, a commercial driver, had said that he began to sell off his property to take care of her child, “I have resorted to borrowing when I don’t have any property to sell again in order to raise money for the medical bill of Olamide.”

In a swift reaction, the Akwa Ibom State government called in to show interest in helping Miss Awofade.

Yesterday, the Special Assistant on Media to Governor Akpabio, Mr Jackson Udom, presented the sum of N1million to Olamide through the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the African Newspapers of Nigeria PLC, publishers of  Tribune Titles, Reverend Sam Adesua.

Mr Udom said: “The governor was moved with passion when he read the story of Olamide and he immediately extended this donation to help a Nigerian in need.”

While receiving the donation on behalf of the family, Reverend Adesua said: “The milk of kindness of Governor Akpabio has flowed across the Niger to Osun State. This action has shown that he is a progressive governor in action,” adding that the company was grateful on behalf of the family.

NB: Many people had called in, asking for an account number through which they could make donations.

Here it is: First Bank Account Number: 3030140838

Account Name: Awofade Solomon
