The Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof. Bamitale Omole, has hinted that the institution’s target is to be ranked among the best 10 universities in Africa.
Omole, who spoke during the inauguration of Board of Advancement Office on Friday, said funding has been a major impediment for the actualisation of the university’s goal.
He said, “Available records at our university show that about 80 per cent of our funds come from the Federal Government. This, of course, is grossly inadequate to meet the needs of our university which, over the years, have continued to increase.
“This is why our commitment in using the advancement office as a formidable platform, is to continue to be the best university in Nigeria and to join the top 10 universities in Africa in a short while. We wish to attain this and many other goals through excellence in terms of our infrastructure, staff and products.”
He added that the board was raised in line with international universities practices of enhancing investment in research and infrastructural development.
“For our university to survive and for it to continue to invest in infrastructural development and maintenance, we have to look at what top ranking universities in the world had done to attract the kind of global attention they are enjoying in terms of research and funding and do the same.
“It is in attempt at adopting the modalities and methodologies they employed that led us to the adoption of the development office model to bring synergy between the university and other stakeholders including the Alumni Association, philanthropists, friends and donors,” the VC said.
Speaking on behalf of the board, Mr. Victor Osibodu, said there was need for OAU to work with others outside the university to raise funds to realise its fund.
“It is my hope that we, the members of the board, will further lay a solid foundation for the university community,” he added.
