WITNESSES of the spectacular first edition of Carnival for Christ organized by the Diocese of Ife (Anglican Communion) including those that got the wind of the second edition, besieged Ife Anglican Grammar School, Arubidi, Ile-Ife, the venue for the Second Carnival for Christ 2013 grand finale with the theme: “The Wonder Working Power of Jesus.”
The amusement coupled with a display of culture that was all encompassing, though with all modesty and its communication of moral lessons, transcends the expected conservative dogmas an average fanatic could have associated with such a gathering.
True to the meaning of carnival as public celebration, entertainment with games and prizes among others, the 14 archdeaconries in the diocese of Ife, emerged one after the other to display their understanding of culture with the aim of convincing their admirers that they are the best archdeaconry in the keen competition.
At the colourful carnival, every on-looker could advocate for a climate change that would prolong the day to make the fun-day an endless one as men and women, young and old, filed out in their different cultural attires, joyfully dancing with all their strength, not only to score high points but to corroborate the true meaning of carnival as a day of celebration.
Added to the colour was the funny display by the ludicrous looking masquerade that kept every participant alive.
Speaking at the event, the Lord Bishop of Ife Diocese, Rt. Rev. Oluranti Odubogun commended the different Archdeaconries for their splendid performance, which according to him, was a lot of improvement over the first edition.
He particularly gave kudos to them for their different displays that communicated meaningful messages to the participants who turned out en masse.
“This is just the second edition, and I believe by the time we shall be celebrating the third edition, it will be more glamorous.”
“The theme: “The Wonder Working Power of Jesus,” has been well expressed and since the Lord is on the throne, and His power supreme, there is nothing to be afraid of.”
“Incidentally, there is an event going on in the town simultaneously which probably did not allow the Kabiyesi, the Ooni of Ife to be here, but we can sense the Almighty Power of Jesus Christ and his supremacy over and above every other gods and distractions evidenced by this large turnout.”
“He has won for us total victory and we need not be afraid of difficulties facing the world vis-a-vis the economic situation in the country as the Lord would definitely see us through. Joy is our portion and we will always celebrate joy,” he said.
In the earlier events participated by all the 14 Archdeaconries before the Carnival which was the grand finale, Edun Abon Archdeaconry took the first position in Bible Quiz Competition, with Moro and Iremo Archdeaconries coming second and third. Cathedral Archdeaconry took the first position in singing competition as Iremo and Ayegbaju Archdeaconries came second and third. In football competition, Eleyele Archdeaconry came first, while Cathedral and Ipetumodu Archdeaconries came second and third.
