Goods and materials worth millions of Naira were on Friday evening destroyed in a fire outbreak at Oja-Tuntun, Odo-Ogbe, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Though the immediate cause of the fire incident could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, Sunday Tribune findings indicated that it may have been precipitated by power surge.
The fire, which raged for about six hours, destroyed no fewer than 60 shops stocked with different goods and wares.
According to an eye witness account, “the fire raged close to six hours before it was put under control by the combined team of fire services and security agencies. It was aggravated by the harmattan weather”.
Inspecting the extent of the damage, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Dr Olalekan Yinusa sympathised with the affected traders and urged them to be careful with electric appliances, especially during harmattan season.
He, however, directed the Director of Empowerment in the Ministry to take account of victims and the extent of damage wrecked by the fire incident, assuring that Governor Rauf Aregbesola was concerned about the plight of the affected traders.
Some of the affected traders, Mrs Omisakin Comfort; Mrs Adenaiya Sakirat and Mrs Isiaka Nusirat, who spoke to newsmen at the market implored the state governor to come to their aid, lamenting that their sources of livelihood had been lost to the incident.
