Nigerian Tribune gathered that Ogundele who was a leader of the PDP in Ife East Local Government Area of the state was said to have been dragged to a secluded area at the back of his house by people suspected to be political thugs and was shot severally in the stomach and part of his private part.
The son of the deceased politician, Adeleke Ogundele, who narrated the incident said late Ogundele was lured out of his residence at 11.30 p.m. by some politicians who had earlier threatened him earlier in the day while the voters’ registration exercise was going on at his Okerewe ward 02.
Apparently corroborating the views of the deceased son, the chairman of the PDP in the council area, Mr Omololu Olusegun explained that some politicians in the area had threatened to kill him for his loyalty to a chieftain of the PDP in the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
He also disclosed that four notable members of the PDP in the area were also allegedly injured by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the voters’ registration exercise.
According to Olusegun, the case had been reported at the Area command’s office of the Nigeria Police Force in Ile-Ife, adding that the corpse of the deceased politician had been deposited at the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.
While paying a condolence visit to the residence of the deceased politician, on Sunday, Senator Iyiola Omisore called on the law enforcement agencies in the country to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
Omisore also cautioned members of the APC in the state against sparking up violence and assured the family of the deceased that their father’s death would not be vain, promising legal action would be taken against those found culpable in the alleged killing of his supporter.
However, in a swift reaction, the Osun APC in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi distanced the party from any complicity in the murder of the deceased, explaining that “members of the PDP in Ile-Ife were behind the killing of their fellow member.”
He lamented that some members of the APC in the state had been allegedly subjected to series of attack by known PDP members, since the commencement of voters’ registration exercise.
In another development, Senator Iyiola Omisore has accused Governor Aregbesola of perfecting plot to implicate him in a phantom murder case in a bid to derail the August 9 governorship election.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Diran Odeyemi, Omisore stated that “We have it on good authority that the state governor has contracted a retired Commissioner of police who is reportedly assigned the task of framing up the false murder charge against Senator Omisore. A false confessional statement is being cooked up around an incident at Okuku PDP meeting a year ago where a party supporter died.”
